Our comprehensive guide to outdoor clothing for babies during Winter, Spring, Summer or Fall.
As we explore the unpredictable British weather and enjoy the beauty of the great outdoors, there’s a sense of adventure that comes with introducing our little ones to nature. Whether it’s a stroll in the park or a weekend hike, having the right outdoor gear and clothes for our babies and toddlers can make all the difference.
Helen Holding, Growth Marketing Assistant at Team Happity, shares her experiences. Let’s dive into the world of all-weather outdoor gear and make sure our little explorers are ready for anything!
All-Weather Essentials
Living in the UK means being prepared for a sudden change of weather or unexpected rain, even in the middle of summer. I think it helps to have a lightweight and breathable waterproof jacket for your little one. Look for features like a hood, adjustable cuffs, and a zip or Velcro closure for easy dressing. All-in-one lightweight suits can be a great option too, and can be a useful addition to your nursery bag. A compact, foldable rain cover for the buggy or pram is also a must have. A lot of buggies come with rain covers, but universal ones can be bought as well. Toddlers often want to go outside in all weathers, so it’s good to have all seasons covered!
Layering For Comfort
When dressing for the colder weather, layering is key. Opt for breathable base layers to regulate temperature, and add a cosy fleece or knit for warmth. This way, you can easily adjust your child’s clothing as the day warms up or cools down. Choose soft, comfortable fabrics to keep your little one happy on all your outdoor adventures.
When my daughter Lyra was still crawling, we got an all-in-one fleece-lined crawl suit. It had fold-down mittens attached and booties, perfect for keeping her warm as she crawled around through the mud and leaves in the garden or the woods.
Adventure-Ready Footwear
Tiny toes need protection, especially when exploring the great outdoors. Choose durable wellies that provide support and comfort. We have ones with handles on so my daughter can pull them on by herself! A good grip on the sole is essential for those first steps on muddy trails or wet grass. If your little one is not yet walking, waterproof booties are a great way to keep little feet warm and clean as they crawl about.
Sun Smart Solutions
Yes, even in the UK, we get our fair share of sunshine! Don’t forget to shield your little one from the bright sun. A wide-brimmed hat that provides shade for the face and neck is a must. Sunglasses with UV protection are a stylish addition during sunny strolls (and of course get plenty of baby safe sun cream!!). Also think about your buggy. When Lyra was a baby we used a SnoozeShade on ours. This was perfect to keep her out of the sun, and acted as a portable black-out blind as we were out and about, making naps easier.
Practical Accessories
A backpack with lots of compartments is perfect for carrying essentials like snacks, spare clothes, and favourite toys. We use the one that came with our buggy. This backpack is essential to all of our outings, carrying all the things a baby or toddler could need. And they need a lot of things! Also consider a compact, foldable blanket for impromptu picnics or a cosy spot to sit during outdoor play.
Sustainable Materials
As conscious parents, let’s consider the environmental impact of our choices. Look for outdoor gear and clothes made from sustainable materials. Many brands now offer eco-friendly options that are kind to both your little one and the planet.
It’s Time To Explore!
Whether it’s enjoying your first outing with your newborn, or exploring muddy puddles with your toddler, outdoor experiences are really important to our little one’s development and learning.
So, let’s embrace the magic of the outdoors, ready with our wellies and waterproof jackets. Happy exploring!
