Description
Walk Starts and Ends: Outside Abney Park Cemetery Egyptian Gates, Stoke Newington High Street
With a stop after about an hour at Clissold Park for refreshment and/or lunch and baby change. You will be given approximately 45 minutes to go and do this before meeting back up with the guide to resume the walk.
"Women from Hackney's History: Stoke Newington"
This walk has been written and is guided by City of London guide and co-author of 'Women from Hackney's History', Sue Doe.
What you'll see and learn about:
- The Eastender who was really an N16 woman.
- The suffragette who taught her fellow campaigners self defence.
- The ‘mother’ of the Salvation Army.
- The women connected with Daniel Defoe’s house.
- The alleged murderer at school in nineteenth century Church Street.
- Who saved the Earl of Oxford from bankruptcy.
- The “absolutely unconventional” signatory of the first suffrage petition in 1866.
- Plus writers, refuges, schools, campaigners, two churches and the beautiful Abney Park Cemetery.
You are welcome to bring friends and family who do not also have a baby.
You can find a number of our Women from Hackney's History walks listed at the moment. They have been adapted from a book of the same name that was co-written by City of London guide and Hackney enthusiast Sue, and fellow Hackney History enthusiast - and well as founder of Bring Your Baby Ltd - Lucy Madison. The book has just been reprinted after a sell-out 1st print run, and can be found in all good Hackney bookshops or at The Hackney Society website.
